THE DEAL WITH
HOMOSEXUALITY-What God tells us about it.

There is a lot of debate going on around the topic of homosexuality. Some people say it’s inborn others say it’s a learned behavior; that one is just socialized into being gay. Such discussions have spurred talks about homophobia and how people should perceive and treat a person with this sexual orientation. So last night I was just doing a research on what the bible says about this when I came across an article by Sam Allberry on livingout.org where he references passages in the bible where homosexuality has been mentioned.
He talks about the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 when the two angels visited Lot the men of the city wanted to have sexual relations with them .The bible says that their sin was very great and the accusations terrible. That night when they went to sleep the people of the city young and old gathered on Lot’s door and demanded that he hands over the visitors so that they can have sex with them. Lot begging urged them not to commit such a wicked thing and even offered his virgin daughters so that they can do as they please with them. He also refers to the passage in Jude 7 which supports this “…just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” Some may argue that this may not refer to their homosexuality but rather the fact that the visitors were angels hence unnatural desire. However there is no indication in the story of Sodom that points to the fact that these people were aware they were angels.so this only means that the reference was for their desire of other fellow men.
In Leviticus 18 and 20 the bible talks of homosexuality as being a sin. It refers to them as forbidden sexual practices.
Leviticus 18:22 “No man is to have sexual relations with
another man; God hates that”
Leviticus 20:13 “If a man has sexual relations with another
man, they have done a disgusting thing, and both shall be put to death. They
are responsible for their own death. “
In the New Testament there are also various verses that speak against homosexuality. In Romans for instance Paul talks about how humanity has fallen and refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of God despite having seen it firsthand even in his creation. They have rejected his teachings and followed their own ways and therefore God has given them over to their dark desires. They have ended up exchanging what is right for wrong, and what is natural for unnatural.
Romans 1:26 “Because of this, God has given them over to shameful
passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural
acts. In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and
burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and
as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their
wrongdoing.”
In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 the bible also clearly states that
those who practice homosexuality among other forms of sin shall not inherit the
kingdom of heaven. Verse 9 “surely you know that the wicked will not possess
God’s kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral or who worship idols
or are adulterers or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are
drunkards or who slander others or are thieves-none of these will possess God’s
kingdom.”
Whether one believes people are born with different sexual orientations or not, truth is homosexuality is a sin just like all the other sins we are warned of in the bible. It is wrong and does not please God. The bible teaches that we should hate the sin in the person and not the person; this means that it is our duty as Christians to correct in a Godly manner and not judge or criticize our brothers who go astray as no one is perfect. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory but we can all be redeemed.
People are so afraid of admitting that homosexuality is a sin because of fear of being called homophobic and understandably so since for a long time people have prejudiced and hated homosexuals but accepted murderers, slanders and people committing all other kinds of sin. Like any other sin we do not hate or discriminate or even judge the person but we recognize that what they are doing is indeed contrary to God’s will, no sin is greater than the other and whoever sins and does not repent and accept God’s grace in forgiveness shall surely perish.
The complacency to sin and all sorts of wickedness that is so prevalent in the world today is a clear indication that we as humanity have turned away from God and His wrath is being poured out against all ungodliness by giving us what we want.
